Architecture practice ClarkeHopkinsClarke works closely with aged and independent living organisations to develop competitively attractive and operationally efficient facilities. The Benalla Health aged care facility is no exception. The projects focuses on a design for residential accommodation that is informed by modern housing trends and supports occupants to remain connected to their friends, family and community while maintaining optimal healthcare.

The high-impact, charcoal-coloured honed entrance and extended building were completed in two stages, so careful management of the batches to minimise colour variation was important. The solid masonry design contrasts nicely with the lush green gardens and outdoor furnishings that provide comfort outside for residents and visitors.

The high-impact walls have close street frontage and minimal eaves for protection, and are open to the elements, so the water-resistant properties of the material were important. The water-resistant properties will assist in keeping the block looking crisp, and the building will patina nicely with age.
