Ashlar is a boutique block of 25 apartments, located among the terrace houses of Sydney’s Surry Hills on the site of an existing rug warehouse. The client for the project is a textile manufacturer whose family had been operating their business from this inner-city site for more than 50 years.
The project brief required improving the street appeal, increasing the number of dwellings and delivering more efficient, better-planned apartments within an existing court-approved DA for an infill site in Surry Hills. The approved envelope needed to be strictly adhered to in regards to building height and setbacks. The architects aimed to deliver a better building for both the surrounding community and the final residents.
The elongated concrete brick format creates a solid, quality exterior, contrasting with the interiors of white-washed herringbone parquetry, soft grey timbers, aged brass detailing and bold veined marble. A prescribed overall building bulk delivers a nuanced building that reflects the rhythm and scale of the suburb while delivering much-needed housing stock and choice.
