As a significant project for Uniting Care Wesley Port Adelaide Inc, and the aged care community in South Australia, the Wesley House redevelopment is a contemporary physical expression of the high-quality, respectful care provided to those who reside within.
Constructed over 3 stages, and almost 34 months, the large building has become a landmark on Military Road .
Using a variety of materials and textures the building mass is articulated and massaged into a residential apartment character . Blockwork, in sand colour to reflect the natural colour of the local beaches, is the primary material, anchoring the building to its setting near the seaside. Blending courses of smooth face standard blockwork with regular patterns of quarter high split -face has created a relaxed, friendly treatment for high two-storey walls, which could otherwise have been overbearing and institutional.
The blockwork pattern is carried through to sections of perimeter walls, raised garden areas and into internal courtyard areas, where it provides sensory stimulation through colour, texture and touch in an interesting contrast to the brickwork , light-weight cladding and timber battening.
