IDW Architecture and interiors was engaged by Mackillop Catholic College on Hobart’s eastern shore to address its temporary and aging classroom facilities.
Master planning for the project identified construction over a vacant courtyard and existing classroom wing as the most appropriate location for 6 new general learning areas , offices and associated facilities.
The college embraced the opportunity to create flexible learning environments linking classrooms and opening up to break out spaces internally and decks / courtyards externally.
Fairbrothers Construction and Joinery undertook the difficult construction with students in occupation in classrooms below.
Expressed white Adbri masonry on the lower levels created a protected courtyard that lower level classrooms enjoy as expanded teaching spaces.
Yellow Adbri masonry highlights the main entry doors and wraps internally to form feature walls.
Material colours were selected to blend with adjacent campus buildings while ribbons of colour on the upper level subtly wrap the new building in the colleges colours.
