Paling Court, completed in July 2015, is a new Residential Aged Care facility for Carrington Care located in Camden. It houses 126 rooms of varying care levels with associated back-of-house facilities and basement car park. It is designed to deliver a high standard of care for the community whilst being sensitive to the site and surrounding built environment.
The design provides a ‘deinstitutionalised’ experience with quality environments that maximise views of the surroundings and enjoy natural light. The palette of materials is consistent with the local urban morphology and contributes to the domestic aesthetic. Concrete blocks were selected as both the external façade material and the internal finish in the public spaces. The dark block, (Austral GB Honed Pewter) defines the private residential rooms whilst the lighter block (Austral Polished Alabaster) was used for the public areas and two spines of the building. The concrete blocks were selected blocks as they relate to the masonry freestanding houses and have depth in their materiality. They are laid in full and half height courses creating a visual rhythm throughout the building.
