In the small community of Dunalley on Tasmania’s peninsula, the rebuild of The Dunalley Primary School has been a vital element to the community in the wake of devastating bush fires in 2013. Four new building consisting of Administration/ Library, Early leaning building and two new General learning buildings are nestled into what has proven to be a difficult site. The buildings providing diverse indoor and outdoor leaning areas while being conscious of access requirements on a steep site. The use of patterned 60%, 40% ration of coloured stackbond blockwork has been pivotal in the construction pallet complimented by rough sawn timber, exposed steel and colorbond cladding. The decision to use blockwork was both functional due to the large retaining that was required throughout the site but they also provide a robust material at a low level around the buildings for the students interact with.
