This single level house nestles into its heavily treed sloping landscape context and presents as a clearly modernist building form to the street. The house design evolved around two large internal courtyards which flood the interiors with natural light and also generate a sense of intimacy and privacy. A modern interpretation of a verandah extends around all sides of the house & allows the internal spaces to engage with the established treed surrounds of the site. We decided to choose brick as the defining material for this project to achieve a strong expression of materiality both internally and externally. The selected bricks have a subtle tonal variation and provid the raw, textural finish that we were after. This is further expressed in the scraped timber floors and cabinetry throughout the house and the paving externally. The result is a robust, low maintenance house featuring natural light and natural finishes throughout which sits very comfortably in its natural setting.
